About Katwa

Known for its temples and historical places, Katwa is a prominent city in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal. It is headquarter town of Katwa subdivision which consists of two municipalities and five community development blocks. Having an extensive historical account of five hundred years, it is also known as the town where Sri Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu got his "Deeksha" from Sri Ishwarpuri and thus is considered very holy and sacred place by the Vaishnavites. Katwa: Past and Present

The ancient town of Katwa was once known as Indranee Pargana. Then it was transformed to Kantak Nagari which actually stands for the town of thorns and thus it came under the fort region of Murshid Kuli Khan who was the Nawab of Bengal during 1717-1727. Town was attacked numerous times by the separated Maratha groups known as the Bargis. The another significance of this place is that it is a place where Chaitanya got sannyasa from Kesava Bharati. Since then, this town has been a sacred place for the Vaishnavites of Bardhaman district and Nadia district.

Geography and Climate of Katwa

Situated on the geographical coordinates of 23.65°N 88.13°E, Katwa is positioned at an average altitude of 21m. The town is located between two rivers, i.e. the Ajay River and the Bhagirathi River and thus is surrounded by water on the three directions; east, west and south. Katwa is at a distance of 150 km from the state capital Kolkata and 56 km away from Barddhaman district and is also situated on the eastern side of the Barddhaman district. Katwa experiences the same weather as of the rest of Gangetic West Bengal regions in which there are three major seasons, i.e. summer, winter and rainy and the other two hardly noticeable seasons, i.e. autumn and spring seasons.

According to the census 2011 details, Katwa town had a total population of 81,615 inhabitants in which there are 41,350 males and 40,265 females. The female sex ratio was found to be 974 as compared to the state average of 950 and child sex ratio was 943 against the state average of 956. Moreover, the literacy rate of the town is 87.13% which are precisely higher than the average literacy rate of the state which is 76.26% and male literates are 90.25% and female literates are 83.94%. The population of the children below age of 6 years was calculated to be 8.33% of the total masses.

Agriculture was the traditional occupation of the town earlier but now in the last few years Katwa has seen an immense growth in the fields of retail and service sectors making it a trading hub of these new service sectors. Also, Katwa serves as the shipment town for all the agricultural items that are grown in the nearby villages. Sankhari Patti, Kharer Bazaar and Kachari Road zone are prominently known for the skilled jewellery makers and flourishing business. Moreover, the town provided its inhabitants with mobile and broadband internet services and recently the government of Bengal has initiated a big mega power project in the town in which many investments are proposed which will make it an industrial hub soon in the recent years. Durga Puja

The commonly and grandly celebrated festival of this town is Durga Puja and Kartik Puja. Here Kartik Puja deserces special mention as it is celebrated traditionally and is known as Kartik Larahai. On Kartik Puja Festival, the pandals are installed in each street of the town. There are places like, Haragouri para, Kharer bazar, Pratibad club, Aoaz club, Janakalyan Club, Jayashri Sangha, Sankhari patti, Samapti club, Young boys club, Desbondhu club, kishalay,Chaulpatti club and Kumor para, which host a big celebration on this day. And people from in and around the villages and town come here to celebrate together and the festival gets changed into a big carnival celebration. Durga Puja hosted at Ghosh Bari has been celebrated from 110 years in Katwa and now it is hosted by Chandra Shekhar Ghosh who is the grandson of Banku Bihari Ghosh. Another festival celebrated here is The Khepa Kali Puja which is attended by all nearby village folk.
